Are you envious of people who are slim?
Every day, we are bombarded with images of people who are, by most standards, absurdly thin. Whether you’re watching TV or even just in the line at a grocery store, the pictures are all around, with wafer thin people projected as the ideal of beauty. It can be incredibly discouraging to anyone who can’t fit into a size 0 – it can feel like you’ll never be thin enough.
The real truth of the matter is that those images that surround us every day are not the everyday reality for the majority of people. In fact, for many people, getting as thin as some of the people we see on magazine covers is quite literally impossible, barring some sort of massive surgery. That may sound depressing, but it should actually be uplifting.
The first step toward having a healthy body image is to accept your body for what it is. That doesn’t mean that if you’re overweight, you are doomed. “Flabby” is not anyone’s natural body type, and for the vast majority of people, “stick figure” isn’t either. Most people are right in the middle, with a body type that we could simply label as “healthy” – neither dangerously thin, nor overweight.
If you try to push your body too hard by under-eating or exercising too much, then you’re putting your health at risk for nothing. Don’t let the media determine what the ideal of beauty is – that’s a right that you should reserve yourself. Keep realistic goals for your body in mind, and you’ll be healthier and still full of confidence.
