Can I lose weight by getting my ear stapled?

Depending on whom you ask, you may get wildly different answers about whether or not having your ears stapled is an effective weight loss technique. Many people flat out call the idea ridiculous. Others believe it works, but have no idea why. Those in the know, however, will tell you that it works by the same principles as the ancient Chinese art of acupuncture. Acupuncture is generally regarded as a legitimate type of medicine (although many still regard it as simple placebo), which lends some credence to the idea. Acupuncture focuses on the internal flow of energy in the body, called Qi. Ear stapling works on a similar principle.

Supposedly, a certain piece of cartilage in the middle area of your outer ear is closely linked to your stomach, and specifically to your appetite. Those who practice this ear stapling technique claim that having this area pierced with a small staple will help suppress your appetite. Some also note that it helps to reduce stress and boost metabolism. The process is somewhat painful, but many people commonly have their cartilage pierced anyway, so it’s nothing outlandishly painful. The staple stays in for up three months, at which point your body adjusts to the effect and the staple must be removed and repositioned nearby.

The scientific community is somewhat split on whether or not this technique actually works. There have been some studies done that supported the idea that ear stapling actually does reduce appetite, thus leading to weight loss. However, many skeptics claim that any effects of this technique are merely placebo – if you think it works, then you “trick” your mind and body into suppressing appetite. That said, if you are feeling the placebo effect, then you are still suppressing your appetite, which is the ultimate goal anyway.
