Comfort Eating – The Dangers

The dangers of comfort eating include weight gain, void of coping abilities, and depression from a sense of isolation and failure. Individuals suffering weight gain from comfort eating experience multiple side effects that result from unhealthy food choices to manage their emotional or psychological discomfort. Comfort eating becomes another form of addiction or habit based on scientific factors such as anxiety, anger, pain, depression, or isolation due to increased weight gain.

It is proven in many medical studies that comfort eating has more cons than pros for anyone suffering from this chronic dependency on food. The fight to improve coping abilities is lost if a person turns to food in times of turmoil; reluctance to change these habits will co-exist as side effects creates burdens in the sufferer’s mind. Proper recognition of these symptoms can help reduce the tumbling effects of comfort eating if the eater begins to control their urges gradually.

Comfort eating can be a deadly for people suffering with diabetes or obesity. Depending on the salt content of what they are eating, comfort eating and binge eating can result in sky rocketing blood pressure and mineral imbalances.  Usually, comfort eating starts in the childhood or teenage years as a way to deal with pressures from family or friends.

Not only are the effects of comfort eating dangerous to one’s health, but the effects of the mental state that brings on comfort eating are also unhealthy.  It is important to seek professional therapy if you are having feelings of depression, anger, unhappiness, pain, or failure, even if they do not result in urges to eat.

One more very bad side effect of comfort eating is that some people, these cases are rare, comfort eat and then force themselves to vomit since they do not want to gain weight. This form of anorexia is especially dangerous and if you are doing this or know someone who is, it is important to get immediate medical attention to avoid serious or possibly life threatening health problems.
